In a frequent attack, the attacker impersonates the default gateway and sends a free Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) to the network so that users can route their traffic through the attacker instead of the default gateway. ![]() Why would an attacker want to spoof a MAC address?Īttackers tamper with their MAC address to perform a man-in-the-middle (MiTM) attack. Technically speaking, spoofing refers to an attacker impersonating the MAC address of another computer, while poisoning refers to the corruption of ARP tables on one or more computers that have been victimized.
